Sunset Lodge Fishing Update

Fishing has been steady on Red Lake even if the weather hasn’t. Actually the weather has been steady – seems to rain at bit each day….. of course rain means, overcast and a walleye chop so bound to have good fishing. Kevin & Mark ventured to Flat Lake one day and landed this beaut of a Muskie. Jeff P. was tossing his own brand of muskie chews and landed his personal best northern at 45″. Deb L. brought in a 29″ walleye only to be outdone by Mikey at 29 1/2″. Still waiting on Mikey’s photo (hint). Even though we have had rain the docks at Sunset Lodge are not under water like last year; right now lake levels are about normal.

Kids Catching Walleye

Ryleigh visited in July and really had to keep an eye on Dad. This was her first Sunset Lodge fishing trip and she caught on fast, pulling walleye and northern from Red Lake with her Dad. This is the 25″ walleye she landed and she was also in on a 33″ northern. Nice going Ryleigh! Hopefully this is the beginning of a long tradition of fishing for Ryleigh and Bret.

Trophy Walleye on Red Lake

Thanks Mike for sharing your photo of the 32 in. walleye that you caught on you July trip to Sunset Lodge. Based on the length weight chart from the local Ministry of Natural Resources this baby would weigh in at over 12 lb. Nice catch and release!

Biting off more than you can chew!

Talk about your northern followup…….Dan was enjoying a day of fishing Red Lake and busy reeling in this nice 22 in walleye. Now everyone has had a follow up but this was more of a lunge and swallow – couldn’t get that northern to release and for a 26 in northern to take on a 22 in walleye that is biting off more than he can chew. Great photo of his ’09 trip to Sunset. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Lake Trout on Red Lake

Wayne is all smiles with his catch of the day and couldn’t wait to share his photo when he returned to Sunset Lodge in the evening. When this laker hit he knew it was no walleye…. Trolling in 20 ft of water and with 8 lb test and a “little walleye minnow” he was really pleased to land this 28.5″ Lake Trout down in the west end of Red Lake. For the rest of the day he was catching walleye too big to keep with his wife Angie landing the biggest of the day at 26″. All in all a good day on Red Lake.

Walleye & Cribbage

Well Deb has some nice walleye to show for this years trip. Pictured is a 22″. She and Kerry were competing for the biggest walleye and with the rain there was some serious cribbage going on. In the end the walleye contest was a tie with both bringing in 24″. As for cribbage, Deb & Rene took Kerry & I best 2 of 3. If I had first count that would have been reversed as I finally got a 20 hand. Next year for the rematch?

Team Curley wins 2009 Fishing Derby

Yes, the Bashfords had to bow down to the Curleys in this first annual father & son Fishing Derby. The kids did really well with Matteo pulling in a 31 1/2″ Northern and Calum a 25″ Walleye. I suspect that if the kids keep fishing like this, one year it will be Dads versus Sons. Apparently the losing family has to buy the trophy; Rob says not to worry, it’s going to be as big as the Stanley Cup and won’t be sitting on the Curleys’ mantle for long cause he fully intends on taking it home next year!

Sandy’s big Walleye

Hey, Sandy you landed a beauty walleye! That’s what I would call fishing like a girl! The rest of the group did well catching both sizes and numbers, but had to work at it a couple of days when the weather didn’t cooperate. Dan chose to mount a 41″ northern; young Alex caught his biggest fish and Craig has promised pictures of his 40+ gator! Water is still high on Red Lake and Chris reports lake temps between 40 and 50 depending on lake depth and current.

Walleye Fishing at Sunset Lodge

Doug & Doc shared some photos with us from their May 2009 trip. All in all the fishing was great. Everyone in the group was able to lock into both numbers and sizes. Best of all those trophy walleye and northern were all catch and release. The guys were in the west end the past couple of days, but alas, they are headed home. Sure wish I could have been there to see this loon.
