Sunset Lodge Fishing Update

Fishing has been steady on Red Lake even if the weather hasn’t. Actually the weather has been steady – seems to rain at bit each day….. of course rain means, overcast and a walleye chop so bound to have good fishing. Kevin & Mark ventured to Flat Lake one day and landed this beaut of a Muskie. Jeff P. was tossing his own brand of muskie chews and landed his personal best northern at 45″. Deb L. brought in a 29″ walleye only to be outdone by Mikey at 29 1/2″. Still waiting on Mikey’s photo (hint). Even though we have had rain the docks at Sunset Lodge are not under water like last year; right now lake levels are about normal.

Northern photos

Craig finally sent us evidence of his spring 2009 trip to Sunset Lodge.  He tied into this gator….. another in a series of 40+ inch northerns that are here on Red Lake.  Great Catch Photo & Release!  Craig hoists another 40+ Northern

2009 Moose Hunting at Sunset Lodge

Well Rene has been busy guiding this fall and 3 of our hunters have their freezers full of moose meat. Orville and Gordie were up north and both bagged their moose; Orville with a 42″ bull and Gordie with a young bull. Steve hunted unit 3 and harvested a 54″ moose.  Good shooting!

Successful Black Bear Hunt at Sunset Lodge

Sunset Lodge hosted 5 black bear hunters this season. With a mix of bow, rifle and muzzle loader, 4 of our 5 hunters harvested their bears. This year we were hunting via the roadway so the guys had a blast exploring the area north of Red Lake on quads. Here are photos of Ben’s (below) and Rich’s bears.

Kids Catching Walleye

Ryleigh visited in July and really had to keep an eye on Dad. This was her first Sunset Lodge fishing trip and she caught on fast, pulling walleye and northern from Red Lake with her Dad. This is the 25″ walleye she landed and she was also in on a 33″ northern. Nice going Ryleigh! Hopefully this is the beginning of a long tradition of fishing for Ryleigh and Bret.

Big Smiles, Big Northern

AJ was pleased as punch to out fish his dad this particular day. He was visiting Sunset Lodge in July of this year so locked into some of those summer northerns this one measuring in at 37 inches (about 15 lbs based on the weight charts). Big smiles, big fish! Congrats AJ!

High Water on Red Lake

Well you may have heard that all is does in Red Lake is rain. And while not the norm, this summer it is true. Rainfall recorded at the airport for May – July was at 18″. Normal rainfall in the Red Lake area is 7″-8″ so that is why the stationary docks at Sunset Lodge are under water. This is the first time we have used the step to go from the floating dock down to the main….normally is is the other way around. We have had some sun this past week so hopefully have seen the crest and things will start to subside. In the mean time the board walk Rene built will remain and unfortunately, the second dock can’t be used.

A Wedding at Sunset Lodge

Local Red Lakers, Andrew and Rachel exchanged their vows here at Sunset Lodge this summer. This is the first wedding held at the Lodge that we are aware of . We wish them many years of happiness. And on Thanksgiving (an October holiday in Canada), our neice will be getting married here as well.

Trophy Walleye on Red Lake

Thanks Mike for sharing your photo of the 32 in. walleye that you caught on you July trip to Sunset Lodge. Based on the length weight chart from the local Ministry of Natural Resources this baby would weigh in at over 12 lb. Nice catch and release!

Great Big Northern

“Just a quick line to say thanks for another great week of fishing and Sunset Lodge hospitality.

I’m attaching a photo of Mike K. with his 45 1/2″ northern caught on a leech harness, …..( Mike also brought in two 39″ pike).

Thanks again for a great time and our countdown for next year has already begun.
